I just started college this past school year. I decided I wanted to go away to college, live in a dorm, and gain some independence. It has been a rough year, so far. Studying is one of my main struggles although I didn’t realize how much I’d miss my mom’s cooking. I miss real food! Between the late night studying and pizza I’m sure I’ve gained at least 20 lbs.
My roommate and I were talking about it one night. We decided that there has to be a better way. I mean, the cafeteria has meals but late at night we needed to come up with some more nutritious options. I decided to use this as an opportunity to do a study for my nutrition class. I would come up with a plan. I decided to interview students to find out what the average college students’ diet consists of and compile all of this data for my final project.
My instructor loved the idea and I started on my project. I researched on the internet REAL Food Blogs and got great ideas for my paper. My roommate got in on the idea and she is also doing a project similar to mine so we are working together. We sat down with the other girls in our dorm and made a menu and a schedule of who had to buy the groceries. We all took turns so it wasn’t so bad. We decided to keep healthy snacks in the refrigerator and cabinets of our small kitchenette.
As I talked with students I found out that it usually goes one of two ways. Either you eat whatever junk food you can get your hands on because, like me, you eat when you are under stress; or you hardly eat at all because you feel that you don’t have the time. One way or the other, it is bad habits and we need to take better care of our bodies and our minds especially during this challenging time in our lives.
