After purchasing your new humidor, one of the most important steps in your humidor setup is to calibrate your hygrometer. In order to follow this step, you should first dampen a towel and wrap it around the hygrometer for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. After the time has elapsed, you should quickly unwrap the hygrometer and read its display. A perfectly calibrated hygrometer for a humidor should 100% humidity. In reality, it will most likely read between 80 and 90% humidity. This is alright, but you should know that once the hygrometer is placed in the humidor, if it reads 65%, it will actually be around 75% humidity in the unit.

The next step in the Humidor setup process for the hygrometer is to turn the hygrometer over and to adjust the calibration screw as needed. Another reference test you can use to adjust the hygrometer is to create a mixture of salt and water. When the salt and water create a saturated solution in equilibrium and frozen for six hours, the humidity inside of the bag will be approximately 75%.
