Why I Love to Visit the National Gallery of Art
I’ve been to Washington D.C. Four different times, and on every trip I’ve visited the National Gallery of Art. It is one of my favorite places to visit in Washington, because it’s so beautiful and there’s so much to see. On my first trip to the National Gallery about 35 years ago, I fell in love with the paintings of Renoir.
I especially love his paintings depicting children, and the soft color palette he uses. My love of Impressionist paintings has grown over the years, but Renoir will always be my favorite. In fact I have many Renoir canvas prints in my house. On one visit to the National Gallery I was lucky enough to view a Rodin exhibit. It was the first time that I had really studied sculpture up close, and it made me appreciate the detail of each piece.
The National Gallery has an extensive collection of beautiful sculptures, and I spent a lot of time on my last visit viewing them. Several years ago, I got to see an exhibit of Salvador Dali’s work at the National Gallery. I had heard of him, but had never viewed an actual piece of his work. The centerpiece of the exhibit was a painting of “The Last Supper”.
I must say that while I respect his talent, Dali is a little too surreal in his interpretations for my taste. Another highlight of my last trip to the National Gallery was getting the opportunity to view some of Vermeer’s work. I love the way he depicts people, and appreciate the way he paints textures so well. The National Gallery of Art is a wonderful place to visit, and I have some great memories of wandering through the various galleries and being in awe of everything I saw. I think the best thing about the National Gallery is that it was different on every visit. There are always new exhibits and works of art being displayed. In my opinion, the National Gallery of Art is one of America’s treasures.
